The founding of Alpha Pi Mu was the result of the efforts of nine Georgia Tech students. The Georgia Tech chapter of Alpha Pi Mu was chartered and recognized by the university on January 25, 1949 and James T. French was elected the first president. The national charter for Alpha Pi Mu, Inc. was granted by the state of Georgia on March 17, 1949. In February 1952, Alpha Pi Mu became the first associate member of the Association of College Honor Societies and attained full membership in February 1959. There are currently 75 active university chapters.
